UCT'S GRADUATE SCHOOL of Business director, Professor Frank Horwitz, has won the prestigious Emerald Literati Network's 2007 Outstanding Reviewer Award. The accolade recognises Horwitz's contribution as a review board member for The Journal of European Industrial Training.

NOBEL PRIZE LAUREATE for Medicine in 1989 Dr Harold Varmus visited UCT as chair of the scientific research group of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He was in Cape Town to attend the annual meeting of 44 research groups that try to solve challenges facing global health.

UCT STUDENTS CAME out tops in the UN-sanctioned Alliance of Civilisations essay competition. Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu handed over prizes of US$4 000 to Steven Kenyon, who won the postgraduate category, and US$1 000 to Alexandra Searle, top student in the undergraduate category. The competition, sponsored by the Spanish Embassy, UCT and the University of the Western Cape, promotes an alliance of Islam and Christian civilisations.

THE FACULTY OF HEALTH Sciences will host the Van den Ende Memorial Lecture: 50th Anniversary Commemoration, held in honour of Professor Marinus van den Ende, the former dean of the faculty, on 6 November. His son, Dr Jan van den Ende, will be the guest speaker at the lecture, to be held at 12h30 in the IIDMM building on the medical campus. Van den Ende will speak on Malaria Control in South Africa: Progress in recent years. Dr Van den Ende is a UCT graduate and lecturer, and headed the department of medical microbiology at the universities of the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal. He was also chairperson of the malaria advisory group to the Department of Health until May.
