Sports round-up

Hockey

Talk about the wax and wane of sporting fortunes. On Saturday, August 19, the men's first team smacked Western Province Cricket Club A by 6-2. But then the side came unstuck in a midweek game against Pinelands, losing 1-8. For some reason, says coach Pierre le Roux, midweek games appear to be his side's Achilles heel. "We just don't play well at night." The women, in the meantime, beat Wynberg 4-1 on August 19, but the B-side suffered yet another defeat, losing 1-2 to Gardens/Constantiaberg.

Rugby

For long, coaches and fans have hoped for more consistency from the FNB UCT First XV. They're getting it this year. Keeping up their good run of results, the team easily saw off Tygerberg by 36-15 on Saturday, August 19. UCT scored five tries on the day. That win keeps the team in third place on the WP Super League standings, one point behind SK Walmers with two games in hand. UCT's quite a bit off the Stellenbosch pace, though. Maties have played just one game more than UCT but stand on 59 points, 13 clear of UCT's 46.
