Africa has its day

30 May 2006

Back to our roots: Africa Day on May 25 provided the impetus for some home-grown attire and décor in the School of Economics, which marked the occasion by hosting the South African round table discussion on development issues in Africa, as part of the Institute of Development Studies (IDS Sussex) 40th anniversary programme. The round table drew delegates from across the continent. The school's lecturers also went to some effort to include African themes in their presentations last week. Photographed here are (from left, back) Gadija Allison, Leigh Lakay and Liziwe Futuse. (From left, front) Nicholas Samoulihan; Prof Melvin Ayogu (HOD) and Dr Edwin Muchapondwa. (Africa Day celebrates the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963, now the African Union. This year's theme is 2006: A Year to Preserve and Celebrate African Languages.)
