Crime alert

06 March 2006

Campus is back in full swing, even if lecturers have to tutor alfresco or even by the light of candles. But please be warned that robberies have increased in the neighbourhoods surrounding our campuses, particularly in the area between Mowbray and Rondebosch.

Campus Protection Services' operations manager Vincent Ricketts says there is no pattern to these crimes, but is concerned that the perpetrators are usually armed.

Students who walk along Main Road need to take heed: walk in large groups if you can, or try to get a lift to your destination, especially after dark.

"Don't flaunt your wealth," Ricketts advises. Keep items like cell phones hidden to prevent opportunistic crime.

While the ongoing power failures have disrupted campus, the CPS team has ensured they are more visible to the community, deploying their personnel.

We have also been asked to keep our eyes peeled for trespassers. It is relatively easy for trespassers to slip onto campus and into buildings unnoticed. Please report anyone suspicious to CPS.

Remember, if you want to report an incident or you need help of any kind, call ext 2222.
