Poetry

Nonzwakazi Ethel Ngangelizwe, a SuperCare cleaner at the surgery department, writes short stories and poems in her spare time. This poem honours the late Hamilton Naki (above).

I Steal with My Eyes

You commit such a crime but they honour you
You steal for the nation to help heart operation
From gardener to surgery they call you Hamilton Naki
Was that natural brightness or silver lining?

Yes, it was a silver lining in human kind
Your lining was not sharpened by education but you did it
Father from my village whose name was not on air
I salute Chris Barnard for exposing your gift

Your soul and spirit is wandering in the wards of Groote Schuur
Looking for those in pain, to comfort them
Your name on the walls gives hope to those who suffer

Naki has open eyes to those who are gifted
His soul will never rest till we cross the river
I will stand on top of the mountain and shout your name
Saying you did it, also together we can do it
I will kneel and bow my head to pay respect to the two heroes
