Don't hide behind academic freedom

I enjoyed reading the letter/article of Professor Leslie London (Academic freedom versus the race card at UCT) and also the Nota Bene (VC visits PASS staff), as my comment is related.

Leslie London's article raises some profound issues that I would hope that Monday Paper would follow up. Some of the things he mentions create an impediment to potential accelerated transformation processes that should be happening on this campus.

Further, it is, close to an insult that sectors within our university community are seeking to abuse the banner of academic freedom to perpetuate the wrongs of the past. Rather, they should be exploring the opportunity and the reality we currently face to bring about an environment of real and truthful transformation, with prosperity for all, and not attempting to engage in practices that basically seek to continue to entrench past practices.

While I understand it is a letter I am responding to, I certainly hope that Monday Paper will have these kinds of issues on the front page as well.
