Hockey players to represent WP

A score of UCT hockey players have been selected for Western Province and Peninsula teams. Jenna Cunliffe, Liesel Dorothy, Tammy Kruger, Jenny-lee Lowin, Lauren Seaman and Robyn Silverstone have all been named for the WP women's under-21 side. In turn, Jessica Glass, Jo Haw, Tamlyn Jones and Kate Munnik will soon don the colours of the WP Peninsula under-21 squad. Among the men, Paul Blake, Chris de Lange, Sean Thompson and Adam Wilson, as well as coach Pierre le Roux, have been included in the WP outfit. Steve Davis, Craig Hall, Jono Griffin, Cobus Jonker, Nic Pullen, Zeno Rossouw, Nic Thompson, Jamie van Schoor and Ashley Hendrickse have also been selected for the WP Peninsula team.

Sassu games

As they did in 2004, the UCT rugby team has again won rave reviews at the annual Sassu under-25 tournament, hosted this year at the Pretoria campus of the Tshwane University of Technology (Tut) from March 27 to April 2. UCT started their campaign on the right note, beating the hosts by 31-29 in the main match on opening day. In their second match, UCT squandered a healthy 15-3 half-time lead to be pipped 20-27 to Rand Afrikaans University in the dying seconds of the game. UCT regrouped and routed a hapless Rhodes University outfit 76-6 in their last game of the tournament. Again, there were many compliments for the side's running game, reports Spencer King, director of rugby at UCT. Based on their performances at Sassu, UCT and seven other sides have also earned themselves spots in the showcase FNB Superbowl, first staged last year, to be held at the end of April in Potchefstroom.
