Agreement allows UCT access to Cape museums

08 August 2003
A co-operative agreement between UCT and Iziko Museums of Cape Town will allow the two institutions to realise their missions and visions in the arts, cultural and scientific fields of study.

Encouraging collaboration and forging closer links between the two institutions, the agreement, which came into effect on April 1, 2003, will afford each of the parties access to the education and research facilities of the other.

"We are hoping to exchange knowledge, provide assistance and undertake joint ventures in the relevant fields of study," said Dr Marilet Sienaert, Director of UCT's Research office.

As a result of the agreement, UCT staff members will have access to Iziko libraries and collections as well as facilities for the storage and care of objects and materials possessed by or under the control of the university. The opportunity also exists for staff members to submit papers for publication in the Annals of the South African Museum and to participate in planned joint research and teaching projects.

Iziko staff also benefit from the agreement as they will have access to the university's libraries, the opportunity to apply to become members, as honorary staff, of any university faculty and to apply on an annual basis for a reduction in tuition fees at UCT.

According to Sienaert, Iziko staff may, free of charge to the university, contribute to the university's teaching programmes for up to an aggregate of five lecture or seminar contact hours per annum.

"Iziko staff participating in teaching programmes may also be appointed by the university as joint supervisors of UCT students undertaking postgraduate studies in the fields of arts, culture and science," she added.

Commenting on the signing of the agreement, CEO of Iziko, Professor Jatti Bredekamp, said the agreement represented an important shift and almost final break with the old order of academic co-operation between natural scientists of the old South African Museum and UCT.

He affirmed: "This agreement demonstrates tangibly the desire of the professionals and scholars at both Iziko and UCT to work across the board on a higher intellectual level."
