Cricket comes to the movies

12 May 2003
The Centre for African Studies (CAS) will be screening two 30-minute movies that take a "fresh and funky" look at cricket from the perspectives of players, commentators, fans and spectators.

The first, Reverse Swing: levelling the playing fields, will be shown in the CAS Gallery in the Harry Oppenheimer Building on Tuesday, May 13, at 13h00. Reverse Swing: field of dreams will be screened the following Tuesday, May 20, at 13h00 in the same venue.

Both films, made by Gauteng-based production house Rapid Blue, were shot during the Pakistan tour of South Africa in December 2002 up to January 2003, and cover the build-up to the World Cup. The intention was to use cricket as a barometer to measure South Africans' identity as a nation.

Mark Kaplan produced the movies, with the CAS' Dr Helen Moffett serving as associate producer.
