Internationalising African higher education

23 September 2002
NAN WARNER, Africa Links Administrator in the International Academic Programmes Office, recently returned from a conference on the "Internationalisation of Higher Education: The African Experience & Perspective". The event was the first ever held to address the higher education internationalisation process in Africa.

"Internationalisation is a difficult process to implement. Most potential African higher education students are uninformed about what African universities have to offer," explains Warner.

Warner says that one of the critical conclusions reached was that universities must internationalise in an African context to remain locally relevant. While African universities have always had international links, these relationships are now changing.

"International education is a big and costly business and institutions need to move carefully into internationalisation," she advises.
