Hockey at UCT

Brothers in arms

IT WAS a case of classmates going up against each other as the UCT men's A and B hockey sides met on the evening of Saturday, July 27. The A side proved too strong for the B team on the day, running out easy 6-1 winners. Currently placed second on the Western Province Hockey Union Log, just three points behind WP Cricket Club A, the UCT men are serious contenders for this year's championship title.

Good win for UCT Women

STRIKER Leshane Luscombe bagged a hat trick as the UCT women hockey side scored a convincing 3–1 victory over the Western Province Cricket Club (WPCC) team at a chilly Hartleyvale on July 27.

The UCT team was on the defence for the first stages of the game, however, weathering a number of WPCC attacks. Finding their feet eventually, the students came close to scoring a couple of times, but, like WPCC, wasted good goal-scoring opportunities.

The last 15 minutes of the first half proved to be the most eventful period of the game, with three goals netted in this quarter of an hour of play. UCT went up with Luscombe's first success, but a defensive error a few minutes later allowed WPCC to draw even.

Within moments, UCT took the lead again as Luscombe was on hand to deflect a goal-bound shot past the WPCC goalkeeper and give the team a 2–1 advantage at halftime.Another defensive slip early in the second half nearly cost UCT the lead again, but WPCC was unable to put a loose ball past the UCT goalkeeper. This was a wasted opportunity WPCC was to regret, as Luscombe extended the UCT lead with her third goal in the 13th minute.

Luscombe almost netted a fourth a few moments later, with UCT taking the game to a clearly shaken WPCC. A downpour late in the game made things more difficult for both sides, and no further goals were scored. With the victory, the UCT side has consolidated its position near the top of the log, still some way off from the rampant Maties and Somerset West teams however.
