At midnight on 26 March 2020, the country’s first official lockdown began, causing the University of Cape Town (UCT) to change its mode of thinking and being in order to adjust to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the university closed its campus spaces, some personnel remained on site to attend to essential services; UCT is indebted to them for maintaining these and other crucial resources and facilities. The new academic year in 2021 saw a slow return to campus, primarily in the residences. This process was conducted under strict health and safety protocols, which staff and students who have returned to campus continue to observe.
