New parents experience increased mental health strain during COVID-19 lockdown
A study by a team of University of Cape Town (UCT) researchers found that the COVID-19 lockdown placed added strain on new parents’ mental health and symptoms of depression were very common.

Vitamin D deficiency does not increase TB risk in young children - study
Low vitamin D levels have been hypothesised by some experts to be a risk factor for Tuberculosis (TB). People who develop TB often present with low vitamin D levels when they are diagnosed. However, whether vitamin D levels at one time point predispose a child to developing TB is debated and not clear.

UCT’s star athlete Mpumelelo Mhlongo shines at Tokyo Paralympics
World champion and University of Cape Town (UCT) star athlete Mpumelelo Mhlongo put on an exhilarating performance at the 2021 Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. The exceptionally talented athlete came in at 11:03 seconds in the men’s 100 m combined T44 and T64 class final, and 6:80 m in the men’s long jump T44 final, breaking the world record in both events.

UCT Law builds closer ties with the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) , based in The Hague, the Netherlands and the University of Cape Town (UCT), will see a PCA representative in South Africa drawn from UCT’s Faculty of Law, and the establishment of a fellowship programme for UCT graduates in The Hague.

Booze ban reduces trauma cases by 18.7% - study
According to a study by University of Cape Town (UCT) and Stellenbosch University (SU) researchers, less trauma cases were reported during lockdown levels with an alcohol ban in place compared to periods where alcohol sales were only restricted.

UCT and Sasol collaborate on use of commercial iron catalysts to convert hydrogen and CO2 into green jet fuel
A team of researchers from the Catalysis Institute at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Sasol have made advancements in the use of commercial iron catalyst, produced cheaply and at large scale at Sasol’s Secunda plant, which would enable conversion of unavoidable or biogenically-derived carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and green hydrogen directly to a variety of green chemicals and jet fuel.
