Study shows midlife metabolism is a myth
When we are babies, our bodies have the highest energy expenditure they will ever have to keep up with the growth needed. Then, after age one, it slows down until we reach age 20, stabilising until age 60, when it slows down again. These are the fascinating findings published in the international journal, Science , with contributions from the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Professors Lara Dugas and Professor Vicki Lambert. The findings will change the way we think about metabolism.

Professor Karen Sliwa of the multi-disciplinary and interprofessional Cape Heart Institute (CHI) at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Department of Medicine, recently recognised by the South African Medical Research Council with a Gold Medal, is the lead Principal Investigator (PI) on the ‘WHF [World Heart Foundation] COVID-19 and Cardiovascular Disease Global Study’ .

Death after surgery is a major public health problem in Africa. Surgical patients in Africa are twice as likely to die in hospital following surgery when compared to the global average . This is due to a failure to recognise and/or respond to common postoperative complications which result in death.

UCT Faculty of Health Sciences statement in planned protest against vaccination at Groote Schuur Hospital
The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Faculty of Health Sciences notes with great concern the protest action against vaccination planned outside Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) on Saturday, 21 August 2021. The Faculty deeply values and supports the right to protest as enshrined in the South African Constitution. The choice of the site for this protest, GSH, creates emotional distress in that it targets a site of hope and care during the pandemic.

Campaign highlights dangers of untreated iron deficiency disorder during pregnancy
The Division of Haematology at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Groote Schuur Hospital has embarked on a massive international campaign to drive awareness on the dangers of untreated iron deficiency disorder during pregnancy. The drive seeks to highlight the importance of a pre‑pregnancy diagnosis, to initiate treatment and to avoid the enormous post‑birth ramifications for the unborn baby.

More than 1.5 million children have lost a caregiver to COVID-19, global study
New research estimates that every 12 seconds, a child around the world loses a caregiver to COVID-19. This startling finding was presented in a research report titled “ Global minimum estimates of children affected by COVID-19 associated orphanhood and deaths of caregivers: a modelling study ”, published recently in The Lancet .
