Dedicated cruise deepens offshore research capacity in South Africa
Two PhD students from the University of Cape Town (UCT) were part of a team of marine scientists that embarked on a multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary offshore expedition to develop the capacity of young southern African scientists and to collect data in outer shelf and deep-sea habitats.

Public transport info gaps in Cape Town limit users’ ability to plan and arrive on time and safely
While it's fairly easy for a car owner to hop into their vehicle, turn on their navigation system and head off to a new place, it's a lot more difficult to do that as a public transport user in Cape Town. Information gaps of public transport can severely constrain a person's ability to reach various opportunities in the city, whether that be getting to a job interview in time, meeting with friends on the weekend, or exploring new places.

Study finds obesity in pregnant women could increase risk of poor health for mother and baby
Maternal obesity changes the structure of the placenta (a vital organ that nourishes the baby during pregnancy) more than gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a form of diabetes first occurring in pregnancy. The new insight, published in The Journal of Physiology , adds to the understanding about the mechanisms underlying poor pregnancy outcomes and the subsequent greater risk of poor neonatal and offspring health.

A comparative study between two diagnostic interventions uncovers an improved active case finding strategy for TB
A study funded by the US National Institutes of Health and the South African Medical Research Council has found that a low-cost scalable (easy to replicate and start-up) mobile mini-clinic, operated by two health care workers, and containing newer portable battery-operated DNA-based diagnostics (Gene Xpert Edge), was feasible and effective for community-based active case finding of tuberculosis in a resource-poor TB endemic setting.

Climate change played major role in UCT’s April 2021 wildfire - study
Climate change was largely responsible in weather conditions that contributed to the devastating runaway wildfire that gutted large parts of the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) upper campus almost two years ago. And as global temperatures soar, wildfire weather conditions as severe as those seen on that fateful day are now 90% more likely to reoccur.

Breast cancer project provides lifeline for patients by fast-tracking treatment
A cancer project established to plug the gap by providing hope and care to cancer patients finding themselves in long public healthcare system queues, provides a life-saving service with a catch-up surgery programme that operates on Saturdays when theatre spaces are normally not used at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH). Clinicians are also providing their services pro bono.

Access to vital form of contraception received by only 50% of women in Cape Town health facilities
Many women receiving antenatal care in public health services in Cape Town choose bilateral tubal ligation as their preferred method of postpartum contraception during their antenatal course. If the sterilisation does not occur immediately, these women are discharged on an alternative form of contraception and, ideally, an interval date for bilateral tubal ligation is arranged.

Peri-urban Cape Town youth with HIV face social challenges contributing to increased risk of obesity
More than two fifths (41%) of adolescents and youth living with HIV (AYLHIV) across peri-urban Cape Town were found to have abdominal obesity, compared to rates for young people in the general South African population (13.7–22.1%). Various factors ranging from the food and built environment, community, family and individual level factors were found to be associated with abdominal obesity in this population.
