A study by a University of Cape Town (UCT) academic has revealed that in South Africa, the elderly are facing growing challenges in meeting their financial needs as the monthly state-provided Older Persons Grant (OPG) is falling short. Their obligations, particularly the primary one of supporting their families, seem to have no end in sight.

UCT research shows positive stimulus effects of a South African public employment programme
New research by the University of Cape Town (UCT) indicates that the largest component of South Africa’s Presidential Employment Stimulus (PES) programme is beneficial to economic growth as it also has an indirect positive effect on non-programme employment and wages.

UCT Council approves concessions for students with fee debt exceeding R10 000

Weather-related hazards put R20bn worth of CoCT’s transport infrastructure at high risk – analysis shows
Severe weather events can wreak havoc in urban environments, and the City of Cape Town (CoCT) is no exception. In a paper published in the Journal of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering , the University of Cape Town (UCT) researchers quantified the volume of transport infrastructure at risk of weather-related hazards in the CoCT and estimated the direct economic value.

Most low-income households in Alexandra cannot afford to completely go off-grid
The University of Cape Town researcher and Yale University visiting research scholar Dr Blessings Masuku has published new research in the Journal of the Development Southern Africa . Titled “Rethinking South Africa’s household energy poverty through the lens of off-grid energy transition”, the research found that most low-income households in Alexandra township in Johannesburg cannot afford to go completely off-grid by securing alternative energy sources like Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and solar energy.
