Former UCT student activists laud late Saunders as 'equality champion' during dark days of apartheid
The University of Cape Town (UCT) hosted an online memorial service for former Vice-Chancellor Dr Stuart Saunders on 24 February. Dr Saunders was a dedicated servant, steward and supporter of UCT. He passed away on Friday morning, 12 February 2021.

UCT’s Energy Systems Research Group weighs in on South Africa’s nuclear plan
Nuclear energy will cost the fiscus more, produce fewer jobs and take longer to meet South Africa’s energy needs than other energy options. This was the clear message of the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Energy System Research Group (ESRG) in their submission to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) earlier this month. The group submitted their research as part of a public participation process that gave stakeholders an opportunity to comment on the proposed procurement of 2 500 MW of new nuclear capacity by Eskom.

World scientists give a nod to UCT-led study to fill the African genome gap
The idea of sequencing the genomes of three million Africans to build a more representative human reference genome is receiving global support, Professor Ambroise Wonkam, director of Genetic Medicine of African Populations (GeneMAP) at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Division of Human Genetics, has learned after a piece he wrote in the illustrious journal Nature recently.

UCT surgeon performs innovative holographic surgery
Professor Stephen Roche and a team from Groote Schuur Hospital recently used a Microsoft HoloLens2 – a holographic helmet – to perform a mixed reality shoulder replacement surgery. The surgery was part of a global 24-hour event in which surgeons from 13 countries collaborated on 13 orthopaedic surgeries using holographic imagery.

South Africa’s burden of child malnutrition remains unacceptably high – Child Gauge 2020 report
The nutritional status of South Africa’s children is deteriorating. One in four children under the age of five are stunted, a sign of chronic undernutrition that has remained stubbornly unchanged for 20 years. Over the same period, South Africa has seen a steady increase in childhood overweight and obesity (one in eight children under the age of five) which is now double the global average. This was shared in the 2020 South African Child Gauge ® published annually by the Children's Institute at the University of Cape Town (UCT) to review the status of children in South Africa and inform evidence-based policy and programming.

UCT approves Sexual Misconduct Policy to scale up sexual offences response
Despite the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic presented in 2020, the finalisation of the new Disciplinary Procedures for Sexual Misconduct was a major development with regards to the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) response to sexual offences.

Global initiative enables young female African researchers to excel in science
Timed to coincide with UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science on 11 February, and to inspire more female students to study and work in science, the Global Challenges Research Fund Synchrotron Techniques for African Research and Technology ( GCRF START ) grant has announced the results of its three-year project launched in March 2019.

Young UCT climate change researcher receives rare honour from National Research Foundation
Dr Christopher Trisos, who directs the Climate Risk Lab at the African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI) at the University of Cape Town (UCT), has received the rare honour of being awarded a P-rating by the National Research Foundation (NRF). This recognition is reserved for young researchers (normally younger than 35 years of age), who have held the doctorate for less than five years and are considered likely to become future international leaders in their field.

A comprehensive new e-library focusing on tobacco taxation and illicit trade has been launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Knowledge Hub at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Research Unit on the Economics of Excisable Products (REEP).
