Young adolescents in the Western Cape show alarming signs of depression and anxiety – study finds
A groundbreaking study by the Alan J. Flisher Centre for Public Mental Health at the University of Cape Town (UCT) has shed light on the mental health landscape faced by adolescents aged 10 to 14 in the Western Cape. The study – conducted by Mirriam Mkhize, Associate Professor Claire van der Westhuizen and Professor Katherine Sorsdahl – forms part of a larger programme funded by the Sue Struengmann Initiative dedicated to addressing the mental health needs of young adolescents in school settings.

The increasing influence of climate change on human mobility and immobility, coupled with misleading narratives surrounding mobility, underscores the pressing need for in-depth research into climate-induced migration patterns. Research published in One Earth has synthesised research priorities for human mobility and climate change adaptation.

A team of researchers at the University of Cape Town (UCT) has developed novel tools to support mine closure planning, management, and policymaking – which are also useful for government, industry, civil society, academia, and international agencies. This is part of a Water Research Commission (WRC) project and has led to the development of a new set of tools to aid responsible and sustainable mine closure in the country.

A new study by the University of Cape Town (UCT) researcher Dr Tamlynne Meyer has revealed that women are perpetually marginalised in the law profession. The study also showed that there was lack of women in the senior ranks of the profession despite a robust legal and policy framework promoting equality.

Weather-related hazards put R20bn worth of CoCT’s transport infrastructure at high risk – analysis shows
Severe weather events can wreak havoc in urban environments, and the City of Cape Town (CoCT) is no exception. In a paper published in the Journal of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering , the University of Cape Town (UCT) researchers quantified the volume of transport infrastructure at risk of weather-related hazards in the CoCT and estimated the direct economic value.
