Breast cancer project provides lifeline for patients by fast-tracking treatment
A cancer project established to plug the gap by providing hope and care to cancer patients finding themselves in long public healthcare system queues, provides a life-saving service with a catch-up surgery programme that operates on Saturdays when theatre spaces are normally not used at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH). Clinicians are also providing their services pro bono.

Access to vital form of contraception received by only 50% of women in Cape Town health facilities
Many women receiving antenatal care in public health services in Cape Town choose bilateral tubal ligation as their preferred method of postpartum contraception during their antenatal course. If the sterilisation does not occur immediately, these women are discharged on an alternative form of contraception and, ideally, an interval date for bilateral tubal ligation is arranged.

Peri-urban Cape Town youth with HIV face social challenges contributing to increased risk of obesity
More than two fifths (41%) of adolescents and youth living with HIV (AYLHIV) across peri-urban Cape Town were found to have abdominal obesity, compared to rates for young people in the general South African population (13.7–22.1%). Various factors ranging from the food and built environment, community, family and individual level factors were found to be associated with abdominal obesity in this population.

Extensive travel and time away from home, different formats, and constant pressure to improve match statistics.
