Ikeys victory parade and other updates

14 May 2025

Dear colleagues and students

The University of Cape Town (UCT) will host a victory parade to celebrate the Ikey Tigers’ milestone 2025 FNB Varsity Cup triumph. Read more about this and other recent developments on campus.

1. Ikeys parade to take place on Thursday

UCT will host a victory parade following the Ikey Tigers’ historic 44–21 triumph over Maties in the 2025 FNB Varsity Cup final. After an 11–year wait, the Ikeys have brought the coveted title home in spectacular fashion, following a commanding performance at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch.

The celebration will take place on Thursday, 15 May 2025, with a special trophy tour on lower and upper campuses to honour the champions. This was preceded by school visits to the neighbouring Ikey Tigers ‘feeder schools’ to extend the celebratory spirit within the broader UCT community.

The UCT community is expected to turn out in full force to show pride and appreciation for the team.

Joining the Ikey Tigers on the tour will be the Under-20 team, who finished as runners-up in the FNB Varsity Cup Young Guns tournament, along with the spirited cheerleaders, who earned third place in the Cheerleaders That Rock competition.

2. Feedback from reconvened Council meeting of May 2025

The UCT Council continues to demonstrate its firm commitment to sound governance, strategic oversight and the advancement of the university’s mission.

During its reconvened first-quarter meeting held on Saturday, 10 May 2025, Council addressed several critical matters – including governance, financial sustainability and senior leadership appointments.

These including the reintegration of the Students’ Health and Welfare Centre’s Organisation (SHAWCO) into UCT; an update on US federal funding; and the establishment of the University Funding Priorities Committee.

3. Upcoming inaugural lecture by Professor Hoadley

Professor Ursula Hoadley is scheduled to deliver a lecture titled “Life in Classrooms: Understanding interruption and enhancement through pedagogy” on Wednesday, 21 May 2025 at 18:00 SAST in the Mafeje Room, Bremner Building.

Drawing on nearly three decades of research, this compelling lecture will explore what takes place inside classrooms, particularly in environments marked by poverty and inequality. It will pose critical and timely questions about the role of teachers in challenging entrenched social inequities, and how teaching practices respond – or fail to respond – to evolving curriculum policies.

A professor of curriculum in UCT’s School of Education, Professor Hoadley has devoted her academic career to examining the intersection of pedagogy, curriculum and social justice. Her work spans South Africa and the broader African continent, earning her international recognition, particularly in early grade reading and structured instruction.

Her research is rooted in real-world classroom experiences and offers invaluable insights for policymakers, educators, and researchers. In addition to her scholarly work, Professor Hoadley has served on numerous national and international boards, editorial panels, and curriculum review committees, and continues to influence the field of education through her thought leadership and research excellence.

The other lecture in the UCT Inaugural Lecture series scheduled for May will be presented by Professor Jacqueline van Wyk on Thursday, 29 May 2025.
