Victory parade to celebrate Ikeys’ Varsity Cup feat

13 May 2025

Dear colleagues and students

We are thrilled to announce a victory parade to celebrate the Ikey Tigers’ recent historic 44-21 win over Maties in the 2025 FNB Varsity Cup final. After 11 years, the Ikeys have brought the title home in spectacular fashion, following a dominant performance at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch.

Join us as we celebrate this feat and honour our champions on Thursday, 15 May 2025 through a celebratory trophy tour on campus.

We anticipate that the UCT community will turn out in numbers to show our pride and appreciation for our team, as well as the coaching and support staff, who lifted the trophy after a decade.

The Ikey Tigers will be joined throughout the tour by the Under-20 team, who finished as runners-up in the FNB Varsity Cup Young Guns tournament; as well as the vibrant cheerleaders, who took third place in the Cheerleaders That Rock competition.

Lower campus celebrations

The parade will kick-off at the Tugwell bus stop at 07:00. During the 20-minute session at this stop, members of the UCT community will get an opportunity to celebrate and cheer the triumphant team, and to take photos.

The parade will then pause to allow for the academic programme to continue as scheduled between 08:00 and 12:00.

Upper campus celebrations

The parade will resume at Madiba Circle at 12:00, proceeding through University Avenue North. It will then stop at the Plaza, where there will be an opportunity for students, staff and stakeholders to interact with the team. There will also be opportunities to view the trophy up close; and take photos with the team members, the cheerleaders and the trophy itself.

This session will last for approximately an hour, and soft beverages will be served.

Win fantastic prizes

In adding to the winning mood, there will also be a competition run via the university’s official social media platforms on the day, with exciting UCT and Ikeys merchandise and other great prizes up for grabs. To enter the competition, all you have to do is share a picture or video taken at the parade using the hashtag #IkeysVictoryParade and tag @UCT_News and @IkeyTigers. More updates on the competition will be shared via the university’s social media platforms.

There will also be some spot prizes on the day.

Schools visits

The victory parade will also feature a number of school visits in the preceding days, with the team stopping at some of the neighbouring Ikey Tigers ‘feeder schools’ to extend the celebratory spirit within the broader UCT community.

Let’s turn campus blue in honour of our Varsity Cup heroes. Come out, show your UCT pride and let us give the Ikey Tigers the celebration they deserve!
