The University of Cape Town deeply mourns the passing of the Founder of Atlantic Philanthropies, Mr Chuck Feeney.

Through his foundation, Mr Feeney has provided significant and generous support for a broad array of faculties and initiatives at our university, over many years.

The recent grant towards the proposed Nelson Mandela Memorial Centre and School of Public Governance, the largest single philanthropic grant ever received by the university, will further deepen the impact of his generosity of spirit, not just to us as a university, but will resonate and impact far beyond our campus.

We have always been inspired by Mr Feeney's legendary humility, frugality, and modesty. We will do our utmost to ensure that the proposed Nelson Mandela Memorial Centre not only honours the legacy of the late President Nelson Mandela, but also embodies these remarkable character traits exemplified by Chuck and his foundation.

Deepest condolences to his family, friends, and former colleagues at the Foundation.

Sincerely

Daya Reddy Emeritus Professor
Vice-Chancellor interim
