Nominations open for VC’s Excellence Awards 2023

02 October 2023

Dear colleagues and students

In a world continuously facing intertwined crises, the University of Cape Town (UCT) remains resilient and persists in driving excellence. Building on lessons from 2022, UCT continues to exemplify inventiveness, rigour in research, voluntarism and community engagement.

Our vision, as you know, is to unleash human potential to create a fair and just society. You, our staff, continue to demonstrate that this vision can be realised.

We hope we have through the year shown, in words and deeds, our recognition of all your efforts. The forthcoming UCT Staff Annual Awards provides a further opportunity for us to show our appreciation.

There is recognition through the Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Awards of the contributions that teamwork, collective action, collaboration and leadership make towards the health and wellbeing of colleagues and in ensuring the sustainability of the university.

We, again, call on anyone who is aware of teams or individuals who have gone beyond the call of duty to make a difference in the lives of others through transformative change, to nominate them for the Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Awards. These awards will be made in three categories: global citizenship, service excellence, and transformation.

We encourage all professional, administrative support and services (PASS) staff to apply or nominate colleagues for the Global Citizenship Award and the Service Excellence Award, while all staff at UCT involved in work related to transformation are invited to apply for or nominate colleagues for the Transformation Award. Nominees can be whole teams.

A brief outline of each of the categories is as follows:

  • Service Excellence: celebrates and recognises outstanding service – including activities, initiatives, practices and/or projects – by staff who have contributed to the delivery of exceptional or significantly improved services to UCT’s staff and students (an award for PASS staff).
  • Global Citizenship: recognises individuals or teams who have demonstrated excellence in living out the UCT mission through areas of service, the pursuit of knowledge, the dignity of the human being, and contributions to the common good (an award for PASS staff).
  • Transformation: aligns with the strategic plan of the university and our vision for excellence, transformation and sustainability, and is aimed at recognising and encouraging individuals or teams to take an active role in driving institutional culture change at UCT (an award for all staff).

The deadline for submissions is Friday, 20 October 2023.

Please submit nominations and applications to vc@uct.ac.za.

Sincerely

Emer Prof Daya Reddy
Vice-Chancellor interim
