Reminder: CHE study on quality of higher education

11 September 2023

Dear students

The Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning, Emeritus Professor Linda Ronnie invites you to participate in a research study that will provide valuable guidance for the implementation of future quality assurance mechanisms in South African higher education.

The Council on Higher Education (CHE) derives its mandate from the Higher Education Act 101 of 1997, as amended. The mandate includes conducting research on developments in higher education and publishing the information acquired in reports on the state of higher education.

The CHE is conducting a study on ‘The State of Quality of Higher Education in South Africa’. The purpose of the study is to gather information, views and perspectives to understand the state of quality of higher education and the changes in the quality of higher education that have resulted from the implementation of quality assurance.

The study requires students to respond to questionnaires, and to participate in focus group discussions and interviews. Responses from those who take up the request to participate will be part of the national data that will be used to establish what the state of quality of higher education in South Africa is, and what needs to be done to improve it.

The CHE has requested the provision of contact data for students who wish to participate in the study. You are urged to please sign up to participate by Friday, 15 September 2023.

Your responses will be submitted to the CHE who will submit this to the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). Please note that no name or any identification data is required. The data that is required is contact details, demographic information and information relating to the qualification for which you are registered.

Participants in the study will in no way be associated with the institution. Therefore, when completing your contact information, please ensure that you use a personal email address that is regularly accessed.

Should you have any questions about the data that is being provided please contact the Senior Manager: Academic Planning and Quality Assurance Unit, Amanda Barratt.
