Participate in the SWS Wellness Drive from 23 to 26 August 2023

11 August 2023

Dear students

The Department of Student Affairs (DSA) through the Student Wellness Service (SWS) division, will host a Student Wellness Drive from Wednesday, 23 August to Saturday, 26 August 2023. The four-day exhilarating and invigorating series of events and exhibitions aim to promote a healthy lifestyle amongst students.

SWS has partnered with a range of internal and external stakeholders who will create awareness on various healthcare challenges. They will also showcase health and wellness services available to support students’ healthy lifestyle choices.

During the Student Wellness Drive we encourage you to visit the SWS information desks to learn more about the following healthcare services:

  • Counselling Services: Speak to professional counsellors who are ready to provide guidance and support for any mental health concerns.
  • Indigenous Health: Learn about the importance of cultural diversity in healthcare and traditional healing practices.
  • Medical Services: Engage with SWS nurses and doctors regarding services offered. Take a wellness screening test and/or learn more about HIV counselling and testing with partners. #Keready, a healthcare platform that shares unfiltered and uncensored healthcare information will provide confidential HIV testing and will share important information about sexual health. The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), the University of the Witwatersrand’s Research in Health Institue (Wits RHI) and Marie Stopes will also be available.
  • Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA): Connect with experts in the field of sports science and discover the benefits of physical activity for overall wellbeing.
  • SWS Pharmacy Services: Discover the importance of proper medication management and learn about different pharmaceutical offerings available to support health and wellbeing.
  • Transformation, Inclusion and Diversity: The Office for Inclusivity and Change (OIC) will be present to engage in meaningful conversations about diversity, inclusivity and around how you can create and contribute to a harmonious campus environment.

Complementary elements and services including therapeutic massages, free haircuts, stress-relieving exercises, arts and crafts activities will be on offer during the wellness drive.

To close off the wellness drive, SWS together with student peer counsellors, as an extension of their usual Saturday events, will host a UCanToo fun run. Runners of all fitness levels are encouraged to join.

Date: 23 to 26 August 2023
Time: 08:00–15:30 daily
