In Remembrance: Gerald Thando Gxalaba

07 September 2022

Dear colleagues and students

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our colleague, Mr Gerald Thando Gxalaba (46), on 21 August 2022.

He joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) as a food services assistant at Tugwell residence in July 2013.

Mr Gxalaba was well loved by all and will be remembered for the pride he took in his work and the positive impact he had on everyone he interacted with. His colleagues will miss his smile, belief in fairness and justice, humour, and his humanity for others. Colleagues who worked closely with him say he will be dearly missed and that his passing has left a huge void in the residence catering team.

He is survived by his 13-year-old son, Sonke, two sisters Nokuzola and Zukiswa, and extended family members.

He was laid to rest on Saturday, 27 August 2022. The department hosted a celebration of life event in his honour on Tuesday, 30 August 2022.

The university has reached out to offer support to the Gxalaba family and our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved him during this time of bereavement.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
