In remembrance: Phumeza Mgxashe

03 March 2021

Dear colleagues and students

It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of the passing of our student, Ms Phumeza Mgxashe (44), on 18 February 2021 due to complications relating to lupus.

Ms Mgxashe was studying towards an MPhil in Inclusive Innovation at the Graduate School of Business (GSB). She has been described as a strong, tenacious, and optimistic woman who believed that every person can and should try to make a difference in this world. She had a purposeful presence and was undeterred by obstacles, so much so that she managed to complete and submit her MPhil dissertation while hospitalised.

Staff at the GSB and fellow classmates were always inspired by her ability to see things so clearly and to navigate around them in order to live her purpose. She was dedicated to her cause, which was to provide low-income communities with alternative sources of energy. Her compassion and commitment will be missed.

Ms Mgxashe leaves behind her brother Vuyisa; sisters Bulelwa and Bongiwe; and five nieces.

Her funeral took place on Saturday, 27 February 2021.

The university has reached out to the Mgxashe family to offer support during this time of bereavement, and our heartfelt condolences go out to them and all who knew and were close to our late student.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
