M3 roadworks and other updates

10 January 2020 | Campus Announcement

Dear students and colleagues

This campus announcement aims to inform members of the University of Cape Town (UCT) community about:

1. Resurfacing of M3 outbound to start on Monday

The City of Cape Town’s Transport Directorate will recommence the resurfacing of the M3 outbound between the N2 and Newlands Avenue on Monday, 13 January 2020. Road users are advised to consider making use of alternative routes. Apart from the resurfacing, isolated defects on the northbound lanes will also be repaired. Although the road will be open to traffic, the City warns that traffic flow will be impeded and that motorists should expect longer travelling times until 31 January 2020 when the maintenance project should be completed.

2. Student registration and orientation for 2020

Registration and orientation of first-year students takes place from 28 January to 7 February 2020. Returning students are asked to view their respective faculty registration calendar online.

3. Accommodation

The university received 16 000 housing applications for the 6 700 spaces that are available on campus for new and returning students in 2020. The university makes 4 500 housing offers to first-time entering undergraduates. Students who have not yet been placed in the residence they were offered accommodation at will be placed in another UCT residence or in a leased off-campus residence. Students who arrive without a housing offer are offered overnight accommodation. Space is then checked in the leased off-campus residences or they are assisted with off-campus accommodation through the university’s Off-Campus Student Accommodation Services (OCSAS).

4. Jammie Shuttle schedule

The holiday season timetable for the Jammie Shuttle bus service will continue until 31 January 2020. Please note that the Jammie Shuttle service is available for free to all staff and students who are in possession of a valid UCT staff or student card.
