In remembrance: Malvern Engel

23 October 2017 | From the VC's Desk

Dear colleagues and students

It is with heartfelt sadness that I inform you of the death of Mr Malvern Engel (60), one of our Jammie Shuttle bus drivers. He passed away in the early hours of his birthday on Thursday, 19 October 2017. Following a short illness, Mr Engel was admitted to the New State Hospital in Mitchells Plain on Monday evening, 16 October 2017, after having what doctors described as a mini stroke.

He started working with Sibanye in March 2015 and was one of the staff members who were insourced to UCT in 2016. He will be sadly missed by all his colleagues within the Jammie Shuttle service.

Mr Engel is survived by his wife and son.

The university is in contact with the family, offering support and assistance during this time. The memorial service and funeral details will only be known once the family has agreed on these.

On behalf of the UCT community, I convey our deepest condolences to Mr Engel’s family, friends and acquaintances.

Sincerely

Dr Max Price
Vice-Chancellor
