5 May 2017

Dear colleagues and students

It is with great sadness that I write to inform you of the passing of Ms Olivia Barron, who was the administrative officer in the Postgraduate Funding Office. She passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning, 4 May 2017, after an acute asthma attack.

Ms Barron joined the Postgraduate Funding Office in 2008 as a senior secretary. In 2011 she was appointed as an administrative assistant and later as an administrative officer in 2013, both in the same office.

At the time of her death, Ms Barron was registered for a BA degree at UNISA. She is survived by her husband and twin daughters, aged five.

Ms Barron's colleagues fondly remember her as a woman who was full of life and one who engendered love. She has been described by her colleagues as a person who approached life with integrity, determination and respect. She was an avid reader, known for her love of writing, and freely expressed her views on issues about which she was passionate. Her dedication to her professional work and to those she served was admirable. Her carefree, kind-hearted nature and wonderful sense of humour will be fondly remembered by her colleagues. She will be greatly missed by her Postgraduate Funding Office family and by all those who loved and cared for her.

Funeral arrangements are still being finalised by the family and will be shared in due course.

On behalf of the UCT community, I offer heartfelt condolences to the Barron family and all of her loved ones.

Yours sincerely

Professor Daya Reddy
Acting Vice-Chancellor
