Appeal to staff, students and parents for accommodation

Campus announcement
3 March 2017

Dear colleagues, students and parents

Our 2017 students are beginning to return to campus in readiness for the start of term on 13 March 2017.

As the University of Cape Town only has a limited capacity of 6 700 beds in our Student Housing system, we know that we will have some students who will not find accommodation in residence. We are also aware that many students are not able to afford the off-campus accommodation on offer, as rentals are at a premium in the areas surrounding the university.

This is an earnest appeal to any staff, parents or students who may have safe and secure accommodation available for 2017, preferably in areas on the UCT Jammie Shuttle route between Observatory and Claremont, to consider making rental accommodation available to UCT students.

The affordable price range for most of the affected students is in the region of R 3 000 to R 4 000 for a room. We would be grateful if private property owners could consider waiving their deposits as many students find it difficult to access the funds needed.

If anyone has accommodation available in areas close to UCT, please contact Ms Rosy Williams at UCT?s Off-Campus Student Accommodation Services (OCSAS) on 021 650 4934 or ocsas@uct.ac.za.

Sincerely,

Dr Max Price
Vice-Chancellor
