21 October 2016 | Campus Announcement

Dear colleagues and students

It is with great sadness that the University of Cape Town confirms the death of Ms Azinga Tele, a master's student in the Department of Social Development who tragically passed away on Saturday evening, 15 October 2016.

Ms Tele was returning from her home in the Eastern Cape, where she was visiting family, when the bus she was travelling in crashed in Touws River, just outside Worcester. The accident killed13 people and injured 43 others. She is survived by her mother and two-year-old son.

She will be buried on Saturday, 29 October 2016, at Engcobo. The Department of Social Development will hold a memorial service for Ms Tele on Wednesday, 26 October 2016, at the Schoenstatt Sister's Chapel in Constantia Main Road, Constantia. Attendees are asked to arrive at 14:30; the service starts at 15:00.

Professor Viviene Taylor, head of the Department of Social Development, described Ms Tele as a “committed and tenacious young woman keen to contribute to the development of poor communities. We mourn the loss of all her potential but also celebrate all that she achieved, especially her drive to complete her thesis.”

Professor Taylor said that she had already earmarked Ms Tele for PhD studies.

We convey our deepest condolences to her family and friends.
