Ad hominem promotions celebrated

25 February 2015 | Story by Newsroom

The university celebrated the achievements and recent ad hominem promotions of 104 members of staff at an event on 17 February 2015 at Smuts Dining Hall.

Ad hominem applicants are rated across a broad range of their outputs, including teaching, learning, leadership, management, administration, social responsiveness and research. The introduction of a process for ad hominem promotions for scientific and technical officers first took place almost a decade ago in 2006.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Max Price toasted not just the staff, but also their families who supported them: "I congratulate you all on behalf of the university community for your ongoing contributions to the academic enterprise. Your success is our success... It's your performance, it's your achievements, that enable us to attract the top students from inside and outside the country, the top doctoral scholars, and the top research partners.

"To those of you who have been promoted to full professor, we now look forward to your inaugural lectures, an opportunity you have to inform a wider audience about your body of work. It's not just a rite of passage, but an important activity of the university, in the sense that it enables us to break down the silos. [It's an opportunity] for people in other departments and faculties to learn a little bit about what their peers and colleagues are doing, and also to show off our stars to the public."
