SRC elections kick off

The 2007/8 Students' Representative Council (SRC) elections are under way. Nomination of candidates opens on 30 July and will close on 10 August.

This year's election theme is 'Heroes', adopted from the television series of the same name currently playing on SABC 3. The show revolves around the lives of ordinary individuals who find themselves with extraordinary gifts, which they have to learn to harness for the betterment of the human race.

We believe this theme to be appropriate as we want all students to believe that they can be leaders, and that it is not necessarily only those with outstanding capabilities that make good leaders.

We are remembering our heroes; those whose leadership attributes emerged at universities across the country, heroes who have risen against adversity, and we will also look at UCT SRC heroes and where they are at present.

The timeline for the election is as follows:

• Nomination of candidates: 30 July to 10 August
• SRC Election Launch: 20 August (to coincide with first day of Q&A)
• Q&A week: 20 to 24 August
