John Donald

In December, John Donald, director of Sport and Recreation in the Department of Student Affairs, was named a Sporting Legend for his contribution to a united non-racial hockey community.

This honour was awarded by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport of the Western Province, and recognises sport and community activists. It's a lifetime honour that accredits the efforts of those people involved in non-racial sport prior to and during the 1994 unification process.

The department focuses on a few sports a year.

Donald was at the frontline of the move to unify hockey's many unions and associations in the Western Cape in the early 1990s. He was the founding president of the Western Province Hockey Union (WPHU), the organisation that sprang from that unification.

Donald led this organisation from 1994 to 2003.
