Soccer women make it to SASSU finale

21 November 2005

Tackling the best: Samantha Epstein, here in action against the University of the Western Cape, and the rest of the UCT women's team will take on the country's best university clubs in December.

The women's first team soccer side is breathing a sigh of relief. The team had qualified for the SASSU Club Championship, to be held at the University of Stellenbosch early in December, pipping the other four university teams in the province (the two from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, plus Stellenbosch and the Western Cape). But an appeal by one of these institutions almost put a damper on their plans. Following deliberations by SASSU's national body, though, UCT has been awarded the three points under contention. The side will now, as they did in 2003, represent Western Province in the championship games, which winds up the national intervarsity season. The event runs at Stellenbosch from December 5 to 9.
