On the prowl: Quick thinking by CPS, (from left, back) Aubin Lovelot and Grant de Monk, and (from left, front) Michael Bova, Ernest Madikane, Shanwille Speelman and Michael Garrad, led to the arrest of three suspected car thieves on campus.

Swift action by Campus Protection Services saw three alleged car thieves nabbed on campus a few weeks ago. Niven Maree, a staffer in the Department of Communication and Development (DCD), saw someone tinkering with his car door while at Welgelegen, home to the DCD, and another person loitering nearby. The two disappeared from sight, with Maree in hot pursuit. In the meantime, another staff member alerted Campus Protection Services, who spotted three suspects walking along De Waal Drive, which runs alongside Welgelegen, on their closed-circuit cameras. Within 20 minutes, Group 4 Securicor officers had the three suspects in custody, although the loot - a bag and dozens of CDs - taken from Maree's car had disappeared, thought to have been dumped somewhere. Maree identified the two that he saw near his car. Charges have since been laid against those arrested.
