Jammie crash: driver error to blame

A forensic investigation into the Jammie Shuttle accident on De Waal Drive has concluded that driver error was to blame.

The investigation, commissioned by the Department of Properties and Services, was based on interviews with passengers, digital and aerial photographs, police reports, at-scene measurements, vehicle-crush analysis and a post-event investigation.

Investigators found that the bus was traveling around 65km an hour at the time of the accident when the left front wheel veered into the gutter and hit a rock, causing the vehicle to collide with the pavement. The driver was unable to regain control of the vehicle before it hit the rock-face, causing it to overturn and land on its side.

Sibanye, the company which operates Jammie Shuttle, has suspended the driver pending the outcome of a disciplinary enquiry process to establish whether there were any mitigatory circumstances leading up to the driver losing control of the vehicle.
