UCT’s Summer School programme celebrates its centenary this year.

It’s that time of the year again when the University of Cape Town (UCT) opens its doors for the annual Summer School programme – a festival of learning and the largest public learning showcase on the continent.

Summer School is the flagship programme of UCT’s Centre for Extra Mural Studies and lectures are open to all members of the public. The 2024 instalment of this much-loved programme marks 100 years since the event made its debut in 1924. For a century, Summer School has fulfilled its commitment to ongoing lifelong learning and sharing a rich repository of research, knowledge and resources with its audience.

This year’s festival kicked off on Saturday, 13 January, and the last lecture will be delivered on Saturday, 27 January. During this time, Summer School will serve up a feast of interesting, thought-provoking lectures and discussions – from a woman’s perspective on the 100th anniversary of radio, to cyber space and human rights, as well as The Lord Peter Hain lecture on bringing looters to justice.
