The third Vice-Chancellor’s Inaugural Lecture of 2019 is titled “Remixing scholarship: Hip hop, the humanities and knowledge production”.

Professor Adam Haupt, professor of media studies at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Centre for Film and Media Studies, will deliver the third Vice-Chancellorʼs Inaugural Lecture of 2019 on 31 July at 17:30.

Titled “Remixing scholarship: Hip hop, the humanities and knowledge production”, Hauptʼs lecture will examine the relevance of humanities scholarship, its contribution to the country’s developmental objectives and the university’s research agenda, along with the ways in which humanities scholarship is being remixed by exploring hip-hop scholarship in relation to debates about decolonising knowledge.

Haupt is the author of Static: Race and Representation in Post-Apartheid Music, Media and Film and Stealing Empire: P2P, Intellectual Property and Hip-Hop Subversion (both available under open content licences), is the co-editor of Neva Again: Hip Hop Art, Activism and Education in Post-Apartheid South Africa, and has co-produced an EP, “#IntheKeyofB”.

The lecture will take place in Lecture Theatre 2, Kramer Law Building, Middle Campus at 17:30 (doors open at 17:00) on 31 July.
