It’s that time of year again, when the University of Cape Town (UCT) community is invited to lace up to take part in the popular Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA)/UCT Memorial Run, which takes place on Sunday, 5 May, starting at 07:00 on the university’s middle campus.

The first race was held in 1983 in memory of UCT star athlete Merrilyn Smith, who died at age 22. In later years, the event also honoured the late Isavel Roche-Kelly and Lindsay Weight, former UCT distance runners who both won the Comrades Marathon twice.

More recently, the race previously known as the Women’s Memorial Run has morphed into the Memorial Run and now also commemorates the late and well-loved UCT runners Kevin Rochford and Andrzej Okreglicki.

Hosted by the UCT Athletics Club, the Memorial Run sees medals awarded to the first 2 000 finishers. Runners pay R70 (licensed) or R110 (unlicensed), juniors pay R50 (licensed) or R75 (unlicensed) while competitors older than 70 enter free if they are licensed and pay R40 if they’re not.

Prizes range from R1 800 for the winners of the Open Category down to R100 for a fifth place in the Junior (14–19) category.

Pre-enter before 12:00 on Tuesday, 30 April at the Sweat Shop in Claremont, on 4 May from 17:00 to 19:30 at the UCT Sports Centre on upper campus, or on the day from 06:00 at the Wilfred and Jules Kramer Law Building on middle campus.

Competitors can drop off their old shoes at registration, at the finish line or at UCT Sports Administration for distribution by SHAWCO to disadvantaged runners.
