Taylor & Francis

22 April 2021

Dear Professor Phakeng

At Taylor & Francis we are deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the fire at the University of Cape Town, and of the extensive damage to the Rondebosch campus, the Jagger Reading Room, and the African Studies Library.

Given our long history of supporting research from Africa, including the work you will be aware of given your valued role as an editorial board member of African Journal of Research in Mathematics, Science and Technology Education, this is a loss we keenly feel. It is one we would very much like to support the University of Cape Town in overcoming. We have a Cape Town-based editorial and production office very near campus, working closely with UCT colleagues and with other local partners, so this tragedy is deeply felt by our team and we would like very much like to help.

The University already has online access to some Taylor & Francis journal content, but in addition we would be honoured to offer the following support for your students and faculty:

  • Making all other Taylor & Francis’ journal content not included in your current subscriptions, including journal archives, freely accessible to the University of Cape Town for a period of 12 months.
  • Making all Taylor & Francis eBook content, over 150,000 titles, freely accessible to the University of Cape Town for a period of 12 months.

This would provide comprehensive support for both teaching and research at the University of Cape Town across an enormous breadth of subject areas, and we hope would help faculty and students alike to continue their work and study as smoothly as possible in the circumstances.

We understand this will be an incredibly hectic time for staff and students – switching access on to these two areas of content would be something we can do very simply and quickly, if this is something you would like to proceed with – and we would be happy to meet with you or any of your staff to discuss logistics at your convenience. We would welcome discussing any messaging required to make your library patrons aware of this additional access.

With best wishes,
Nitasha Devasar
