More UCT students to be invited back under level two
Students registered in performing arts courses, those needing to undertake practical blocks, and selected postgraduate researchers will be invited in phases to return to residences or academic spaces in alignment with the amended University of Cape Town calendar.

Africa’s first genetics study sheds light on inherited disorders
New research investigating the genetic modifiers of long-term survival in individuals with sickle cell anaemia reveals a range of possible pathways for novel therapeutic interventions. Professor Ambroise Wonkam, principle investigator and director of Genetic Medicine of African Populations in the University of Cape Town’s Division of Human Genetics, says apart from the study’s clinical potential, the fact that it is so deeply rooted in Africa also presents the opportunity for a paradigm shift in science policy and diplomacy.

UCT celebrates exceptional educators with highest accolade
Teaching and learning are the core tenets of a university and in order to ensure that students receive the best education possible, there must be exceptional educators that go above and beyond. The University of Cape Town acknowledges the primary place of teaching and learning in the university’s work through the annual Distinguished Teacher Award. It is the highest accolade awarded to teaching staff at all levels within the university and recognises excellent teaching.

Innovative tech ear solution for face masks designed for frontline workers
UCT MSc student in biomedical engineering Lara Timm has designed an ear saver solution, UCT Hearo, to assist the clinical partners and members of UCT’s COVID-19 Research Task Team, who experienced the discomforts of wearing a mask fixed around the ears for hours on end.

A project led by UCT lecturer Dr Rosalie Tostevin is translating segments of South Africa’s rich geological record into official languages other than English, starting with isiXhosa. The project aims to better represent the diversity of languages spoken in South Africa and help connect people who have historically been excluded from scientific discourse with their geological heritage.

Every year UCT honours a high school teacher who has been nominated by a former learner who is now studying at UCT. The learner sends a motivation to a committee stating why their teacher is suitable for this accolade. This year, the winner of the 2020 Stella Clark Teachers’ Award is Mr Hebert Muzi Gumbi, who teaches Accounting at Mathunjwa High School in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal.

Inequalities in higher education are one of the forces of rising inequality
What is the role of economic resources in determining opportunities in academic education and research, freedom in the positive sense? This was the focus of the University of Cape Town TB Davie Memorial lecture presented by Professor Ravi Kanbur. As a professor at Cornell University in the United States Kanbur researches and teaches in development economics, public economics and economic theory. He is also a former chief economist for Africa at the World Bank.
