UCT launches milestone Khoi and San Centre
The University of Cape Town (UCT) recently launched the Khoi and San Centre , which will foreground erased or marginalised indigenous knowledge, rituals, language and “ways of knowing” of the San and Khoi clans across the university and its communities. Many of their descendants still live in communities across the Cape Flats – and many are students, staff and graduates of the university.

A new data policy in the City of Cape Town in 2016 led to a productive cooperation between the City and academic researchers – including researchers from The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab Africa (JPAL-Africa) based at the University of Cape Town (UCT) – to create systematic data access.

To save the academic year, tertiary education institutions in South Africa moved lectures online. While virtual classes on personal tablets may have become the global norm, many South African students lack access to the internet, and may rely on shared devices off which to learn.

UCT open online courses once again in the top 200 of all time
Five University of Cape Town (UCT) massive open online courses (MOOCs) have been included on the 2020 Class Central's Best Online Courses of All Time list. This list is based on more than 125 000 learner reviews globally. MOOCs provide an opportunity for UCT’s academics and researchers to share their knowledge with a global audience while allowing the university to showcase its array of intellectual and teaching resources.

UCT medical students keep elderly citizens company during lockdown
A group of medical students from the University of Cape Town are keeping elderly citizens company during the national lockdown – from a safe distance. The initiative is known as Adopt a Granny/Grandpa and is the work of the student-led UCT Surgical Society, in partnership with social housing provider Communicare.

Infrared system’s early warning for diseased livestock
Like humans, animals are threatened by deadly pandemics that spread quickly and, in the case of commercial livestock, decimate herds and flocks. But an inexpensive early warning diagnostic tool developed by the University of Cape Town’s Professor Amit Mishra and start-up company 3DIMO holds hope for small- and medium-scale livestock farmers, many of whom are black women.

UCT student residence first in SA to get Green Star rating
With its water and energy savings and full suite of disability features, the University of Cape Town’s new 500-bed Avenue Road Residence is the first South African student housing development to be awarded a Green Star rating from the Green Building Council South Africa. The project achieved a four-star rating.

Study explains global plant biodiversity patterns in Cape Floristic Region
What explains global patterns of plant biodiversity – environmental history or ecology? A new study, involving University of Cape Town researchers, argues that biome ( an area of the planet that can be classified according to the plants and animals that live in it ) stability is the strongest predictor of biodiversity. Areas that are brimming with species diversity are so because they have been ecologically stable for long periods of time, allowing evolution to forge ahead undisturbed.
