Africa’s first genetics study sheds light on inherited disorders New research investigating the genetic modifiers of long-term survival in individuals with sickle cell anaemia reveals a range of possible pathways for novel therapeutic interventions. Professor Ambroise Wonkam, principle investigator and director of Genetic Medicine of African Populations in the University of Cape Town’s Division of Human Genetics, says apart from the study’s clinical potential, the fact that it is so deeply rooted in Africa also presents the opportunity for a paradigm shift in science policy and diplomacy. 26 Aug 2020

Innovative tech ear solution for face masks designed for frontline workers UCT MSc student in biomedical engineering Lara Timm has designed an ear saver solution, UCT Hearo, to assist the clinical partners and members of UCT’s COVID-19 Research Task Team, who experienced the discomforts of wearing a mask fixed around the ears for hours on end. 17 Aug 2020

Translating geology terms into isiXhosa to represent diversity A project led by UCT lecturer Dr Rosalie Tostevin is translating segments of South Africa’s rich geological record into official languages other than English, starting with isiXhosa. The learner sends a motivation to a committee stating why their teacher is suitable for this accolade. This was the focus of the University of Cape Town TB Davie Memorial lecture presented by Professor Ravi Kanbur. As a professor at Cornell University in the United States Kanbur researches and teaches in development economics, public economics and economic theory.
