UCT's drug discovery centre receives R18m donation from former Coca-Cola chairman to drive crucial research
University of Cape Town (UCT)'s alumnus and former chairman and CEO of Coca-Cola, Neville Isdell, has donated US$1 242 160 (about R18 million) towards research into the discovery of new medicines for infectious diseases at the UCT Drug Discovery and Development Centre, H3D.

The Kalahari Desert is becoming too hot for birds: new study
The Kalahari Desert, one of the world's last true wilderness areas, will lose much of its birdlife before the end of this century due to climate warming, according to a new scientific study by four South African authors, including University of Cape Town's (UCT) Dr Susan Cunningham, published in the American scientific journal, PNAS.

Outstanding UCT scientist to develop two new TB research areas after winning R1.5m Oppenheimer Fellowship award
University of Cape Town's Professor Valerie Mizrahi, who is the recipient of the prestigious Harry Oppenheimer Fellowship Award for 2018 for her research into tuberculosis (TB), plans to use the award worth R1.5 million to develop two new areas of research which are built on expertise in the biology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis as it relates to TB pathogenesis and drug discovery.

Leading cause of children deaths through injury is preventable - UCT academic
The leading cause of death for children between the ages 12 months and 18 years old is injury, and most of it is preventable. This is according to University of Cape Town's (UCT) Professor Sebastian van As, head of the Red Cross Children's Hospital Trauma Unit.
