Collaboration is key for research on the African continent
Researchers on the African continent are facing the kinds of struggles that become predictable in under-resourced institutions, an Africa Day Mini-Symposium held recently at the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM) at the University of Cape Town (UCT) Faculty of Health Sciences heard. The symposium focused on the opportunities and challenges in capacity-development experienced by researchers on the continent.

Birds prefer to live in luxury than in poor areas, study finds
A unique study of birdlife in South African cities has found that birds prefer wealthy areas to poorer ones but will move out if things get too cramped. The study was conducted by a team of scientists from the University of Turin, Italy and the Universities of Cape Town (UCT) and the Witwatersrand, South Africa. Their findings were published this week in the international journal of Global Change Biology.

Immunity against infection extends beyond breastfeeding period - new study
Mothers can transfer life-long protection against infection to their infants by breastfeeding. This was the finding from new research in mice by an international team of scientists led by researchers at the University of Cape Town (UCT).

Online platform launched to improve legal research in Africa
An online platform that is aimed at improving access to case law in Africa has been launched by the African Legal Information Institute (AfricanLII) and the Democratic Governance and Rights Unit (DGRU) at the University of Cape Town (UCT). The online research platform searches case law across 14 African jurisdictions and 250 000 cases, offering a machine learning generated summary and a graphical representation of the links between judgements.

UCT granted first-of-its-kind full membership on global cybersecurity body
The University of Cape Town's (UCT) focus on cybersecurity has seen the institution being honoured as the first academic institution in Africa to be granted full membership of the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST), the recognised global leader in incident response.

A double international win for UCT archaeology professor
Professor Shadreck Chirikure, who heads the University of Cape Town's (UCT) Department of Archaeology, has become the first African to win the Antiquity journal of archaeology's Antiquity Prize twice. Professor Chirikure won the award for best paper of 2018.

UCT steps up efforts to foster multilingualism
In an evolving world, the ability to speak more than one language has become second nature. As part of the University of Cape Town's (UCT) New Language Policy, the institution offers an isiXhosa short course at no cost to staff and students after the government identified the need to promote different languages at South Africa's institutions of higher learning.

UCT professor honoured with prestigious award by Emperor of Japan
University of Cape Town (UCT) applied mathematician and fisheries scientist Emeritus Professor Doug Butterworth has been awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon by the Emperor of Japan for his contribution to the sustainable management of the country's fisheries.

Penguins and their chicks' responses to local fish numbers informs marine conservation
How adult penguins fish and the body condition of their chicks are directly linked to local fish abundance, and could potentially inform fishery management, a new study has found. The researchers studied an endangered African penguin colony during a rare three-year closure of commercial fisheries around Robben Island, Cape Town, and their findings are published today in the Journal of Applied Ecology.
