Journey of an African academic
On 15 May, a panel of African scholars gathered on the health sciences campus for a discussion on the experiences and challenges faced by academics from the continent. Panellists included Prof Kelly Chibale (H3-D, the Drug Discovery and Development Centre), Assoc Prof Heather Marco (Zoology) and Assoc Prof Collet Dandara (Human Genetics).

Peter Buckton – who started working at UCT in 1971 as a cleaner, and has since been a lab assistant and a student of history before going on to become a senior sports administrator for Sports and Recreation – speaks to Abigail McDougall about what it means to walk past the statue of Cecil John Rhodes every work day for 44 years, and then, one day, for it to be gone.
