Protection of refugee rights – why human rights commissions may be the answer
With an unprecedented increase in the number of refugees around the world in recent years there is a need to effectively promote and protect refugee rights particularly in Africa, which has historically been the continent with one of the largest displaced populations. This is according to Dr Vivian John-Langba, a recent PhD recipient at UCT whose research identified national human rights institutions as one of the institutions through which effective promotion and protection of refugee rights can occur.

Climate change may lead to increase in health effects associated with exposure to pesticides
Climate change may lead to an increase in health effects associated with exposure to endocrine disrupting pesticides, unless measures are put in place to ban the manufacture, trade and use of these pesticides. This is just one finding from research by Dr Cliff Zinyemba who recently received his PhD in Public Health from UCT.

New candidate TB vaccine appears safe and immunogenic in treated TB patients
The results from a clinical trial investigating the use of a candidate vaccine that prevents the recurrence of TB in people who have recovered from the disease , displayed an acceptable safety profile and encouraging evidence of vaccine-induced immune responses when given to cured patients at the end of treatment.

Cigarette market normalises after sales ban is lifted, but is not the same as before - UCT study
Cigarette prices have decreased sharply from their highly inflated levels during the sales ban, but are substantially higher than their pre-lockdown levels. The average retail price of cigarette brands produced by the multinationals is nearly 5% higher than before the sales ban, while the average retail price produced by the local manufacturers is 30% higher.

When Tshediso Mahange was just 13 years old, he had endured years of emotional and mental abuse at the hands of his stepfather. That’s when he made a life-altering decision: the teenager decided to pack his bags and move out of the house. COVID-19’s sex bias: men more at risk of requiring critical care
A global scale collaboration between scientists from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and University College London (UCL) investigating the role of sex in patients infected with COVID-19 has found that women have better early anti-viral response than men. The paper was published in Nature Communications today.
