Joint Statement: Excessive Use of Force by the South African Police Service (SAPS)
UCT's Safety and Violence Initiative (SaVI) and Centre for Criminology speak out against the excessive force used by SAPS Public Order Policing members against unarmed protesting students at Parliament and in other parts of South Africa this week.

Cities in the Global South: crucibles of change
UCT's African Centre for Cities (ACC) aims to understand and work with cities on their own terms, and to create the interdisciplinary knowledge base needed to support the emergence of more equitable African cities; cities that are liveable and sustainable.

UCT launches new initiative to recruit, develop and retain academic talent
The University of Cape Town (UCT) has recently launched a new initiative to advance the development of black academics and to ensure the university expands and accelerates the pipeline to transform the professoriate. The Recruitment, Development and Retention programme (RDR) is an umbrella for a number of constituent initiatives that will furnish academic staff with greater clarity in their career paths and provide targeted support to help them to succeed.

UCT Vice-Chancellor to run for mental health on 11 October
Dr Max Price, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town, will run alongside other Western Cape academics in the Gun Run in support of mental health care for economically disadvantaged people.

UCT team smashes 8-year water rocket world altitude record
A team from the University of Cape Town's Industrial Computational Fluid Dynamics Research Group has successfully broken the longstanding Class A water rocket world altitude record by a massive 33%, achieving a height of 830m.

Why we should care about dust - and the crucial role it plays in our climate
Dust doesn't get a lot of attention until it collects in dark corners, or blows up in dramatic storms. However, that is beginning to change. While carbon dioxide is the main driver of climate change, scientists have begun to realise that dust also plays a crucial but highly complex role in controlling global climate - as well as a number of other global scale processes, including ocean productivity, and even soil and water quality.

UCT criminology centre gives meaning to SAPS crime statistics
The South African Police Services (SAPS) annual statistics have many shortcomings, but the report remains a valuable tool for figuring out the state of crime in the country, a report by the Centre of Criminology at the University of Cape Town titled: "A citizen's guide to SAPS crime statistics: 1994-2015" has noted.

UCT climbs to 120 in THE world university rankings
The University of Cape Town has risen 4 places to 120 out of 800 institutions in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings of 2015/16. In the last 2 years UCT has steadily climbed up the ranking, from #126 in the 2013/14 period to #124 last year.
